Whether carving a championship layout through the jagged coastal brush of the Caribbean or routing an 18-hole track down the dramatic volcanic slopes of La Gomera, the architectural canvas dictates every tactical calculation a player makes. While casual observers focus on scorecards and final leaderboards, the true friction of the game lives in the topography: the slope of a fairway, the positioning of a hazard, and the psychological weight of an Atlantic breeze.

Nowhere is this topographical theater more pronounced than at Tecina Golf on the southern coast of La Gomera, a layout classified among the premier courses in the Canary Islands. Designed by British architect and writer Donald Steel, who characterized it as his most exciting and challenging project, the course presents an unusual architectural inversion. Inaugurated in December 1994 and designed by José María Olazábal through Integral Golf Design, Los Palos offers a starkly different utility. Spanning a soft, gentle orography with a total length of 979 meters from yellow tees and 890 meters from red tees, this par-27, nine-hole pitch-and-putt facility is engineered for speed, family play, and short-game refinement. Vueltas are remarkably agile; players can complete a nine-hole loop in an hour or an 18-hole round—consisting of a double loop—in just two hours and fifteen minutes.

Yet, compactness does not equate to a lack of tactical nuance. Los Palos places a premium on precision. The third hole features a small green defended by a bunker right at its entrance, while the fourth hole is recognized as the course's most difficult test due to its length, forcing players to manage a green protected by dual bunkers while negotiating an out-of-bounds boundary on the right. Similarly, the fifth hole introduces a dry lagoon running from the tee to the midpoint of the fairway and hugging the right side all the way to the green, contrasting against an indigenous Canary Island garden featuring tabaibas, aulagas, and dragon trees on the left.

When scaling up to global championship destinations, the design philosophy shifts toward endurance, resort luxury, and multi-course variety. Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic exemplifies this expansive scale, anchored by Pete Dye masterpieces including Teeth of the Dog—ranked as the number one course in the Caribbean—alongside Dye Fore and The Links. Teeth of the Dog features seven holes directly skirting the Caribbean Sea, requiring players to balance power and precision across a stroke-play and Stableford ecosystem that hosts elite international fields, from the Casa de Campo Open to specialized pro-ams and team cups.

Across these environments, whether navigating the volcanic red lapilli and palm-lined fairways of Tenerife or the cliffside drops of La Gomera, the architectural constant is adaptation. Golfers cannot merely execute standard swing mechanics; they must read the micro-topography, respect the prevailing coastal elements, and accept that the landscape itself is the ultimate opponent.
