When elite professional golf tournaments seek to expand their public reach, they typically tweak ticket structures or alter fan zone layouts. The KLM Open took a far more charismatic route by appointing one of European football's ultimate icons as its figurehead. Ruud Gullit, the 63-year-old former AC Milan and Chelsea star who captured the Ballon d'Or in 1987, returns as Tournament Director for the 106th edition of the Dutch DP World Tour event at The International near Amsterdam.

Gullit’s role is not a mere ceremonial photo opportunity. Connected to the event through tournament organizer TIG, Gullit accepted the leadership offer without hesitation. However, his mandate is sharply defined to maximize his strengths without disrupting the intricate mechanics of professional golf administration.

Division of Labor: Atmosphere Meets Tournament Operations

Rather than managing rulings, tee times, or player movement, Gullit focuses entirely on crowd engagement and event energy. He works alongside long-standing sports tournament director Daan Slooter, creating a clear division of executive responsibilities.

I see myself more as a director of atmosphere than a tournament director, Gullit explained. The KLM Open should offer top-level sport, but also energy, enjoyment and connection. Golf at the highest level, all with a smile. — Ruud Gullit

This operational split allows Slooter to maintain the integrity of the sporting execution while leveraging Gullit's global celebrity status to attract fans who might not otherwise follow tour golf. Slooter noted the practical impact of the partnership:

The KLM Open has stood for top golf for more than a century. With Ruud as tournament director, we add a unique sporting profile and reach a broader audience. — Daan Slooter

The World Cup Bridge and the 'Orange Summer' Synergy

The scheduling of the 2026 KLM Open provides a unique promotional runway. Staged from June 4 to 7, the tournament finishes exactly one week prior to the kickoff of the FIFA World Cup across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Tournament organizers have harnessed this timing to frame the DP World Tour stop as a sporting warm-up for a broader, international Dutch sports summer.

This national theme filters through the Pro-Am and fan experience. Gullit himself remains an active presence on the course, regularly teaming up in Pro-Am events with fellow Dutch football legends Marco van Basten and Patrick Kluivert. Beyond attracting national attention, Gullit sees his position as an opportunity to demystify golf and dismantle traditional socio-economic barriers across the Netherlands.

People know me from my football career. That is why I can help make golf more visible, Gullit stated. Golf is growing here. More and more public facilities are being built, making the sport more accessible for children and young people. Golf is still expensive, but we are trying to lower the barriers to entry. — Ruud Gullit

From Milan 'Razor Blades' to Single Handicap: Gullit's Golfing Odyssey

Gullit's passion for the game began during his playing days at AC Milan. His introduction to golf was trial by fire, starting with a set of Jack Nicklaus MacGregor irons that left little room for error.

They were incredibly difficult to play. Like razor blades, Gullit recalled. — Ruud Gullit

Despite the steep initial learning curve, Gullit ground his game down to a single-digit handicap. He became a familiar face in elite pro-am setups, competing at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland alongside DP World Tour professionals Tyrrell Hatton and Robert Rock. Yet, despite his own success as an amateur, stepping inside the ropes at events like the Ryder Cup reshaped his perspective on elite golf mechanics.

We are miles away, Gullit said. When you walk inside the ropes, you hear the conversations between players and caddies. The caddie delivers all the information, and the player executes it exactly. It is unbelievable when you consider how difficult golf actually is. — Ruud Gullit

For Gullit, the psychological crossover between world-class football and golf centers on elite focus and error management under pressure.

Football is everything to me, but golf touches me differently, Gullit remarked. After my football career, golf allows me to stay competitive. Many footballers discover how great golf is after their careers. The competition, the concentration and the game against yourself – top athletes recognize that immediately... Golf challenges you. It remains a competition, you meet many people, and in the end, the one who makes the fewest mistakes usually wins – just like in football. — Ruud Gullit

Venue Transition: The Final Amsterdam Chapter Before the Coastal Return

The 2026 edition carries additional significance as a venue farewell. This tournament marks the final staging of the KLM Open at The International before the event shifts in 2027 to the historic dune layout at Kennemer Golf & Country Club in Zandvoort—a venue that has hosted the Dutch Open 23 times previously.
