It requires an internal thermostat—the ability to absorb sudden swings, reset after self-inflicted mistakes, and maintain structural discipline when an opponent mounts a furious counter-attack. That was the exact crucible Meadow Tian faced on Friday, July 17, 2026, at Moraine Country Club in Dayton, where the incoming University of Illinois freshman added the 103rd Women's Ohio Amateur title to a rapidly expanding trophy case.
Conducted by the Women’s Ohio State Golf Association in conjunction with the Northern Ohio Golf Association and Miami Valley Golf, the week began with stroke-play qualifying on Monday and July 14, where stroke-play leader Addison Kartusch set the early pace at one-under par, with Tian lurking close behind at even par alongside Mia Raines. Once the bracket narrowed down to the match-play rounds on Wednesday and Thursday, the tournament transformed into a test of attrition.
The final showdown against Kartusch—a rising junior at Bowling Green State University—unspooled like a heavyweight prize fight characterized by violent momentum shifts. Tian flashed her capabilities early, surging out to a commanding 3-up lead through her first five holes. But match play rarely follows a linear script. Kartusch responded by capturing holes 6, 7, and 9 to square the match before the turn. The turbulence continued on the back nine: Tian rattled off three consecutive hole wins, only to watch Kartusch answer with a matching three-hole surge of her own. Tian ultimately scraped together enough steady play to take a slight advantage into the conclusion of the first 18 holes.
The second 18 offered no immediate relief. Kartusch squared the match almost immediately after 20 holes, erasing Tian's edge with clinical precision. Yet, it was around the 27th hole that Tian finally engineered a decisive separation, capitalizing on fatigue and capitalizing on her opponent's minor slips to build a crucial 3-up lead heading into the final nine-hole stretch. Tian’s triumph at Moraine Country Club continues an extraordinary run of regional dominance. Last October, the Olentangy High School standout captured the OHSAA Division I girls golf state championship at Firestone Country Club by firing a brilliant 4-under-par 66 in her final round to finish at 1-under 139, erasing a four-stroke deficit. Later that summer, she claimed the 49th Ohio Girls Junior Championship crown by coming from behind with rounds of 75-66-72.
Beyond the historic silverware and the steady accumulation of regional titles, Friday's victory yields an immediate professional and amateur stepping stone: Tian earned a coveted exemption into the 2026 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. With her amateur résumé firmly established in the Buckeye State, Tian will immediately pivot toward her next challenge, carrying her hard-earned momentum straight to Champaign in August to begin her collegiate career as a freshman for the Fighting Illini.
