For Riley, the ascent to the top of the leaderboard marks a stark departure from a grinding 2026 campaign. Entering the week ranked No. 146 in the FedEx Cup standings with ten missed cuts and no finish higher than 42nd in his previous eight starts, Riley found the missing pieces of his game through steady ball-striking. The whole game's kind of trending and getting in the right direction, Riley said, as quoted by Golfweek. Having struggled off the tee all season—losing an average of 3.20 strokes in that metric—Riley hit all but one green in regulation on Saturday, highlighted by a massive 54-footer for birdie on the long par-4 17th and a closing conversion at the 18th.

While Riley seized the solo lead, the day's most explosive charge belonged to Denmark's Rasmus Højgaard. Starting the day tied for 62nd and having made the cut right on the number at 3 under, Højgaard scorched Detroit Golf Club for a 9-under 61. His flawless card featured nine birdies and over 130 feet of made putts, tying the course record set earlier in the week by Peter Malnati and Cameron Young, and matched previously by Jake Knapp in 2025. Højgaard vaulted 62 positions into a tie for third at 12 under, cementing his round with a gutsy up-and-down par save on the treacherous 17th after missing his drive way left.

Brennan, a 24-year-old former Wake Forest standout who won the Bank of Utah Championship in his first start as a professional, held the lead for much of the afternoon before a bogey on the final hole dropped him to 14 under. It would be awesome, Brennan said regarding the prospect of another PGA Tour victory. It would be great. Meanwhile, second-round co-leader Cameron Young struggled to find momentum, shooting a 2-under 68, while co-leader Patrick Fishburn plummeted to a 74 and a tie for 48th.
