When the Cleveland Browns hosted ten youth flag and tackle teams across Northeast Ohio for Youth Football Day at the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus, head coach Kevin Stefanski framed the moment through a lens of pure gratitude. They're blessed and fortunate and lucky to play a kid's game. I'm so lucky to coach this game, so we all can put ourselves in these kids' positions,
Stefanski remarked as the squad worked through their second consecutive padded practice featuring live tackling clevelandbrowns.com.
That physical tone served as a necessary incubator for a roster preparing to test itself on the road. Following a dominant 30-10 preseason opening victory against the Carolina Panthers on August 8, 2025, the organization quickly shifted gears toward a demanding multi-city travel block Akron Beacon Journal. After a brief return to Berea for a solitary 9.30 a.m. session, the team packed its bags for the City of Brotherly Love to partake in intense joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles ahead of their August 16 preseason clash Akron Beacon Journal.
Yet, the physical demands of camp have exacted a measurable toll on the depth chart. The most pressing narrative in Berea centers on a cluster of soft-tissue injuries that have complicated the offensive framework. Rookie third-round pick Dillon Gabriel managed only a single 11-on-11 drill after battling hamstring tightness, though he returned to limited 11-on-11 reps following evaluation Akron Beacon Journal. Meanwhile, fellow quarterback Kenny Pickett remained restricted to individual work and seven-on-seven drills as he continued his slow progression from a hamstring strain originally sustained on July 26 Akron Beacon Journal. Rookie wide receiver Luke Floriea suffered a serious hamstring injury during the third quarter of the Carolina matchup after hauling in a 30-yard reception, prompting front office adjustments Akron Beacon Journal.
To fortify a secondary battered by camp attrition, general manager Andrew Berry brought in additional reinforcements, claiming cornerbacks Christian Holmes from Washington and Darius Rush from Pittsburgh while waiving Floriea with an injury designation and offensive tackle Roy Mbaeteka, who was replaced by international designation player Kilian Zierer Akron Beacon Journal. On the defensive line and interior, second-year guard Zak Zinter returned to practice following an undisclosed injury that kept him out of the trip to Charlotte, while linebacker Mohamoud Diabate remained sidelined alongside defensive back Greg Newsome II, who continued to operate under a limited designation due to a shoulder issue Akron Beacon Journal.
Discipline and emotional control also surfaced as vital coaching points. Following veteran safety Rayshawn Jenkins' ejection during the Panthers' second offensive series—triggered when Panthers wide receiver Xavier Legette threw three initial punches before Jenkins retaliated—Stefanski treated the incident as an instructional milestone Akron Beacon Journal. Good teaching moment for our football team. We never ever, ever, ever, ever want to throw a punch that gets you thrown out immediately,
Jenkins noted regarding the confrontation Akron Beacon Journal.
As for when a definitive pecking order might emerge under center, Stefanski maintained a cautious stance when asked if the Philadelphia joint workouts would serve as the backdrop for naming an official starter. I'm not there yet, but certainly those are all things I'm thinking about,
Stefanski stated Akron Beacon Journal. With high-intensity sessions against Nick Sirianni's Eagles squad on tap for August 13 and 14, the coming days in Pennsylvania will likely force the coaching staff's hand faster than any whiteboard projection ever could.
