When Crave and HBO Max signaled that Heated Rivalry was officially cleared for a second season on December 12th, 2025, the renewal arrived before the freshman run had even finished airing. Based on Rachel Reid’s acclaimed hockey romance novels, the television adaptation turned the secret, volatile enemies-to-lovers dynamic between rival players Shane Hollander—played by Hudson Williams—and Ilya Rozanov, brought to life by Connor Storrie, into a cultural phenomenon. Yet, translating that momentum into a swift follow-up has run headfirst into the realities of television writing and production timelines.
Fans hoping for an immediate turnaround will have to exercise patience. Speaking to Variety, showrunner Jacob Tierney laid out the logistical gap bluntly: It can’t be same time next year because this time last year I’d written five of these [episodes] and this time this year I’ve written zero of them. So it’s going to be a little bit later, but it’s still going to be soon.
That gap was subsequently anchored to a concrete release window when Tierney revealed at a BookCon panel in New York on April 21 that Season 2 will officially drop in April 2027.
While the wait stretches past the two-year mark between seasons, Tierney defended the pacing against the pressures of rapid-fire streaming demands. We understand that everybody’s goal is to not do two years between seasons,
Tierney noted, while adding a firm boundary: And at the same time, I don’t want to put out a rushed sh---y second season just because the show is popular - but we’re aware that our creative partners are enthusiastic and don’t want to wait too long. We’re getting back to work!
Ahead of that release, producer Justin Stockman told The Toronto Star that production teams were evaluating the feasibility of a special episode, though nothing has been officially locked in.
Narratively, the second season will expand its footprint across Reid’s extended Game Changers universe while keeping its anchor locked firmly on its central duo. Rachel Reid herself put any narrative fears to rest regarding a shifting focus, assuring Variety: Obviously, the focus has to stay on Ilya and Shane. We’re not going to do Season 2 and it’s a totally different couple. It wouldn’t be very popular.
Season 2 is set to primarily adapt the plot of The Long Game, which tracks the high-stakes tension between Ilya—who desperately wants to come out publicly—and Shane, who remains adamant about staying in the closet. Alongside that central friction, the canvas is expanding to introduce characters from Reid’s companion novel Role Model. Crave announced that Charlie Gillespie and Justice Smith have been cast as grumpy hockey player Troy Barrett and peppy social media manager Harris Drover, respectively. Their crossover storyline will weave directly into the fabric of Season 2 alongside returning fan-favorites Scott and Kip, ensuring the rink stays crowded with fresh personal and professional conflicts.
