When elite youth sports programs struggle against structural limitations, the friction point is rarely ambition. More often, it is calendar logistics and cash flow. For the Sezione Giovanile of Hockey Club Lugano, maintaining a seamless development track across 23 competitive teams and a burgeoning Hockey School requires an intricate financial and operational architecture. Under the stewardship of Foundation President Massimo Pedrazzini alongside board members Fabio Gaggini, Emilio Martinenghi, Luca Pedrotti, and Lara Pozzoli, the organization has turned fiscal growth into an ongoing competitive advantage for Ticino's rising generation.
At the core of the foundation’s mission is a pragmatic intervention: eliminating the traditional four-month summer ice interruption through targeted funding for summer ice programs. Operating across an organization that supports roughly 420 to over 450 young athletes—depending on post-pandemic intake waves that added more than 100 new registrants—the financial machinery must be relentless. The foundation's revenue generation has scaled significantly, jumping from CHF 270,000 in 2023 to over CHF 450,000 in 2024, while crossing CHF 230,000 within the first five months of the subsequent cycle.
The Funding Architecture: Events and Institutional Reach
This acceleration is driven by a diversified revenue model. Key pillars include the annual Skateathon—yielding over CHF 170,000 across two editions—and the Golden Wings Club gala, which has secured over CHF 300,000 through three iterations. High-profile backing from NHL goaltender Elvis Merzlikins, who serves as an active financial supporter, auction donor, and interview contributor, has further amplified visibility.
Beyond private philanthropy, the foundation has aggressively courted regional municipalities. Approximately one-third of the 58 Ticino communes from which the young players originate now contribute to the initiative, a civic integration that anchors the club deeply within local communities. Inside the Cornèr Arena’s Golden Wings Lounge, 28 dedicated plaques honor major non-sponsor philanthropic donors, illustrating an ecosystem built on civic pride rather than traditional corporate advertising.
Technical Deployment and Staffing Infrastructure
Financial stability directly translates into on-ice deployment. The Sezione Giovanile's competitive pyramid features the premier U21 Elit squad managed by Raffaele Sannitz, alongside high-profile additions to the technical staff. Notably, former U.S. professional forward Mark Arcobello has stepped into a coaching role following a 519-game National League career, assisting head coach Jason Fritsche on the U18 Elit bench to mentor both developing prospects and emerging coaches.
Specialized departmental oversight is mapped across all age brackets:
- U21 Elit: Managed by Raffaele Sannitz
- U18 Elit: Coached by Jason Fritsche, assisted by Mark Arcobello
- U16: Coordinated by Christian Stucki
- U14: Coordinated by Edoardo Raimondi
- U12: Coordinated by Max Cordiano
- U9 & Hockey School: Coordinated by Alain Pasqualino
- Specialist Coaches: Paolo Della Bella (Goaltenders), Flavien Conne (Skating and Technique), Jean Pierre Blazek (Physical Preparation)
This structural depth is reinforced by grassroots outreach. Through the Scuola in pista initiative, which last year engaged 18 classes and over 300 children via a dedicated van bringing material directly to kindergartens, young participants receive personalized on-ice sessions and invitations to National League fixtures alongside their families. Moreover, first-team players periodically rotate into U9 and U12 practices, closing the gap between aspiring juniors and professionals.
As the club looks toward upcoming showcases like the Family Day Helsana against Kloten and the dedicated Academy Match against Bern, the framework established in Ticino offers a masterclass in sustainable youth sports management. By fusing grassroots kindergarten outreach with professional-grade technical specialization, HC Lugano has transformed a local hockey school into a self-sustaining laboratory for future talent.
