A shift in mountain weather across the historic 8,000-acre Blue Ridge estate redefined trail dynamics on day two of the Biltmore Challenge. Following a steady Friday where cooperative trail conditions yielded high completion rates across the 25-mile and 50-mile divisions, heavy humidity and rain on Saturday tested tactical pacing and metabolic management. Across the two-day fixture, 178 total horse-and-rider combinations started across five distances, with 137 successfully completing their designated routes.

Saturday 30-Mile Sweep and Multi-Day Rigors

Tom Rajala delivered Saturday's standout performance in the 30-mile ride, navigating humid conditions aboard Mary Full of Grace to secure first place in a ride time of 3:44. Sweeping the judged awards, Mary Full of Grace posted a Best Conditioned score of 750.5 and a High Vet Score of 462.5 among nine horses presented. Rajala’s victory came less than 24 hours after a resilient performance in Friday’s 50-mile ride aboard AF Jack the Knife. In that event, Rajala lost a shoe two miles into the loop, backtracked to reset it on the trail, and rejoined the course to finish third overall in 7:24:58 after adding roughly four extra miles to his run.

Finishing six minutes behind Rajala on Saturday, Heidi Perreault earned second place aboard DancingintheMoonlyte with a time of 3:50. The performance wrapped up an exceptional weekend for Perreault, who won Friday’s 50-mile distance on Amadahess by edging out Mark Landers on Kevlar by a single second (7:00:32 to 7:00:33), where Amadahess also earned Best Conditioned honors (715 score) and the High Vet Score (435).

Millie Turner demonstrated notable consistency aboard Sunny Afternoon, finishing third in Friday's 25-mile Limited Distance (pulsing at 2:57, behind winner Courtney Krueger on Miccah at 2:53 and Mark Reader on JD at 2:56) before taking third place again in Saturday's 30-mile contest in 3:52. In the junior ranks, Aiden Robb recorded a multi-day sweep aboard Nevada, taking Friday's LD junior title in 3:16 before capturing Saturday's 30-mile junior division in 5:37.

Roster Logistics and Distance Adjustments across Biltmore

Prior to the event, ride management made administrative adjustments when the premier 100-mile option registered fewer than five entries. Organizers cancelled the 100-mile class and worked alongside Cheryl van Deusen and the Arabian Horse Association to transition riders into the 75-mile distance, which also hosted the AHA Region 12 Championship.

On Saturday, rider packets included rain ponchos that proved effective for the 30-mile and 55-mile fields, though humidity limited their utility on the longer 75-mile loop. To support recovery, riders utilized 60cc syringes of Equilytes provided by Vetline Equine. Course preparation required Team Biltmore to clear downed timber across more than 100 miles of trail, supported by maps designed by Stagg Newman and RideWithGPS digital routes created by April and Dan Johnson alongside Joe Schoech. Behind the scenes, logistics were coordinated by away-position lead Bonni Hannah, camp and food organizer Rachel Kelly, trail crew members Stephanie LaPlante and Annie Markley, parking leads Tim Clark and Shawn Polke, and official farrier Jeff Pauley. Ride Vet Ken Marcella was also noted advising Palmetto Bug on two-day pacing strategy.

Team competition brought additional depth to Friday's 50-mile event. El Molino Norte and the Cool Team—comprising Heidi Perreault, Tom Rajala, Jesseanne Norton, and Elizabeth Farina—claimed top honors with a cumulative top-three time of 21:58:36. Mountain Mamas and the Mule took second in 23:36:55, followed by Unnamed but Willing in 23:38:36.

Individual milestones were also acknowledged across the field. Dawn Osborne rode FYF Dutch to pass the 5,000-mile cumulative endurance milestone in Friday's 50-mile ride, tying for 11th place alongside Nicki Meuten on FYF Last Call in 7:47:49. Medical and veterinary monitoring maintained safety throughout: one horse received treatment on site and recovered fully, while one rider was evaluated at an emergency room for contusions and a mild concussion before being released the same day. With results submitted to the AERC registry, organizers are now looking ahead to hosting the 2025 Biltmore Challenge and National Championship.
