With concurrent scheduling placing elite talent into The Hundred, counties across the circuit are forced to dig deep into their reserves. We have an exciting crop of younger players coming through, and together with some more experienced heads we are looking to build on performances from the other formats this season and in the ODC over the last few years, Gorvin said.

Having captained St Fagans while studying at Cardiff University, his tireless work ethic caught the eye of county scouts. His breakthrough summer arrived in 2024, when he finished as the joint-leading wicket-taker in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup alongside teammate Dan Douthwaite and Warwickshire’s Ed Barnard, collecting 19 scalps. That campaign included a career-best 5/56 against the Notts Outlaws at Neath and a dramatic, nerve-shredding one-wicket rescue act with the bat alongside Jamie McIlroy against the Sussex Sharks.

Those performances earned him the Balconiers’ Most Improved Player of the Season award for 2024 and a two-year contract extension through 2026. Wallace pointed directly to that background when explaining the decision to install Gorvin as leader, noting that he is one of the most popular and respected members of the squad.

Dugouts and Dual Roles

The coaching setup further illustrates the transitional nature of the 50-over block. David Harrison returns to reprise the role he held during Glamorgan's 2021 title run, taking charge as One Day Cup coach while head coach Richard Dawson fulfills commitments with Welsh Fire in The Hundred. Harrison will be joined in the dugout by veteran South Africa batter Colin Ingram, who is transitioning into an assistant coach's role after a wealth of playing experience.

For Harrison, the tournament represents an ideal laboratory to test depth while maintaining a competitive standard. With multiple players away at The Hundred the competition allows us to give opportunities to different players, Wallace noted, echoing the pragmatic optimism required to navigate a heavy domestic slate.
