> Going 30-9 while dropping zero sets to local opponents, Edwardsville freshman Jake Brinker shattered program precedents to capture the Intelligencer boys tennis MVP.

When a freshman steps into the cauldron of high school tennis at the top flight and immediately locks down the top singles spot, the standard operational rhythm of a storied program shifts. For Edwardsville High School, that pivot arrived courtesy of Jake Brinker, whose 30-9 campaign culminated in him being named the Intelligencer’s boys tennis MVP.

Brinker’s ascent did not materialize out of thin air. Even before stepping onto campus for his official high school career, he laid down a marker by capturing the 16-and-under boys singles championship at the Tiger Classic. Rooted in a tennis-centric household where his father frequently hits with him and both sisters play the sport, Brinker’s developmental timeline had long caught the eye of the coaching staff. Edwardsville head coach Dave Lipe noted that the program recognized as early as Brinker's seventh-grade year that he possessed the trajectory to eventually challenge for the premier spot.

That projection became reality in the spring. Playing No. 1 singles throughout the entirety of the dual-match slate, Brinker swept through local competition with surgical precision. As Lipe highlighted, Brinker did not drop a single set to anyone throughout the Metro East. His defeats were exclusively packed against high-caliber opposition from St. Louis and Chicago, validating a battle-tested resume.

The silverware followed in bunches:

- **Southwestern Conference (SWC):** Swept through 5-0 duals to help Edwardsville capture its 25th consecutive conference title, secured the SWC Tournament singles championship, and added a No. 2 doubles title alongside Brandon Wong. Cleaned up individual accolades by sweeping SWC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors.
- **Class 2A O'Fallon Sectional:** Claimed the singles championship in a tightly contested internal battle, defeating teammate Brandon Wong 7-5, 6-0 in the final. In doing so, Brinker became the first Edwardsville freshman to capture a sectional singles title since Brandon Harris in 2011, powering the Tigers to their seventh straight sectional team title.
- **State Tournament:** Secured the first state tournament victory of his career by dispatching Batavia's Kalin Wolff 6-1, 6-2 before bowing out in consecutive rounds, contributing to Edwardsville's tied-for-13th finish at the Class 2A state tournament.*“Jake did something very special his freshman year, and I know that he's motivated to continue to improve throughout the next three years.”* — Edwardsville coach Dave Lipe

What separates Brinker from typical teenage phenoms, according to his coach, isn't just clean ball-striking or tactical maturity—it is his capacity to process instruction. Lipe points out that Brinker stands out as one of the best listeners he has ever coached, a trait that explains why a player who started the year in tight challenge matches against Wong ultimately seized total command of the top position.

By earning the program's first freshman MVP nod since Colton Hulme pulled off the feat in 2021, Brinker has set an unforgiving benchmark for local prep tennis. Yet, with three years of high school eligibility still ahead of him and an active offseason training regimen already underway, the narrative in Edwardsville isn't about a peak reached; it is about a foundation poured.
