It marks a dramatic ascent for a program that head coach Jerry Cowan described as being \u201cdown in the dumps\u201d when he took over ahead of the 2024 campaign.

That upward trajectory is built upon a foundation of returning personnel and stark roster contrasts within the rest of the conference. While three of Region 9's six programs return two or fewer total starters from 2025, Hurricane brings back 13 total starters from a squad that finished tied for second in the region a year ago.

\u201cOur first year we did a good things, won five games, and then last year our senior class got us back on the map as a program and made it so teams were at least respecting us and knowing that they can\u2019t just look past us like they maybe did in the last several years,\u201d Cowan noted regarding the program's cultural turnaround.

## The Offensive Equation: Battle Under Center

While the defense boasts continuity, Hurricane's offense is considerably greener, returning just three offensive linemen and two receivers from a group that put up 30.64 points per game last fall. The most pressing tactical decision facing the coaching staff involves an ongoing quarterback competition between junior Kannon Cowan and senior transfer Gunner Higgins.

\u201cKannon\u2019s been our freshman and JV quarterback the last 2 years. He\u2019s been very successful and hasn\u2019t lost a game at those levels. Gunner\u2019s a move-in that has a lot of good qualities about him. He\u2019s more of a gunslinger, and Cannon\u2019s more of an athlete,\u201d Cowan explained. \u201cBottom line is both of them give us a chance to win games. We feel real good about having that type of depth.\u201d

## The Transitional Landscape of Region 9

Hurricane's status as the unanimous pick is magnified by massive roster turnover among its traditional rivals. Crimson Cliffs, which claimed four straight region titles and back-to-back 4A state championships in 2023 and 2024, slots second in the coaches poll while undergoing a total rebuild. Head coach Wayne Alofipo must replace 21 starters, leaving the Mustangs with just a single returning starter—though that lone returner is standout quarterback Tanoai Andresen, who threw for 2,042 yards, a 65% completion rate, and a 29-to-8 touchdown-to-interception ratio as a junior.

Meanwhile, the rest of the region features a logjam and shifting sidelines:
