# The Milkman’s Masterpiece: How JJ Watt Designed Burnley’s New Identity

> Former NFL star and Burnley FC co-owner JJ Watt spent two years collaborating with Castore to design the club's 2026-27 away kit, blending local heritage, a beloved retro crest, and a cinematic milk-delivery launch.

When elite athletes transition into sports ownership, the playbook usually involves luxury boxes, remote boardrooms, and sanitized public relations. Former Houston Texans defensive end JJ Watt, however, has never operated according to standard script conventions. Since coming on board as a minority shareholder and advisory board member of Burnley FC in May 2023, the five-time Pro Bowl player has traded passive viewership for pint-pulling research sessions at the Vintage Claret and muddy boots around Lancashire. His latest immersion goes deeper than director's box attendance: a two-year collaborative design project with technical partner Castore resulting in Burnley's away kit for the 2026-27 Championship campaign.

Unveiled on July 31, 2026, the new away strip arrives as the club looks to bounce back immediately following relegation from the Premier League. The kit features a clean ecru colourway paired with claret shorts and cream socks, carrying a visual weight rooted entirely in local architecture and supporter sentiment. According to Castore co-founder and CEO Tom Beahon, the level of immersion was unprecedented in professional sport. In all my years working in elite sport, I've never known an owner become so immersed in the design process, Beahon noted, emphasizing that Watt challenged every decision and consulted closely with supporters to ensure the final product met exacting specifications.

At the center of the design philosophy is the reinstatement of one of the club's most celebrated coats of arms. Featuring two lions, a worker bee, and the red rose of Lancashire, the heraldic crest was originally worn on shirts from the late 1970s until 1983, and again from 1987 until 2009, when it was retired in favor of a streamlined shield as the club ascended to the top flight. Bringing back that specific shield was non-negotiable for Watt, who noted “Bringing back this iconic crest was extremely important to me, mainly because of how much it means to our supporters, but also because I'm just a massive fan of it.”

## The Architectural and Historical Blueprint

Beyond the resurrected crest, the kit incorporates granular nods to Burnley's storied history:

- **Gawthorpe Hall Stonework:** A bespoke pattern woven into the fabric draws direct inspiration from the Elizabethan stonework of Gawthorpe Hall, the 16th-century country house and estate that has housed the club's training ground since the 1950s.

- **Matchday Typography:** The inside neckline features a customized wordmark adapted from the literal lettering found on Burnley matchday programmes from the 1960s and 1970s.

- **Foundational Stamp:** Just beneath the rear collar, an '1882' script anchors the jersey to the exact year of the club's foundation.

For Watt, who has acknowledged the turbulent turbulence of three managers, two relegations, and a promotion during his three-year tenure as a co-owner alongside ALK Capital, the shirt represents stewardship rather than ego. As I’ve said many times before, this club existed long before I arrived and it will exist long after I’m gone, Watt reflected. During this time, my goal is to help honour its great past while also shepherding it to a brighter future.

## The Milkman Campaign Launch

To market the kit, Burnley released a cinematic promotional campaign titled *The Cream Rises*, playing directly into Watt's old NFL moniker, "The Milk Man," earned through his reliable dominance on the gridiron. The short film tracks Watt navigating cobbled Lancashire streets behind the wheel of a traditional milk float, delivering the new kit across the community. Along the route, he stops to drop off packages with prominent local figures and Burnley faithful, including cricketing icon Sir Jimmy Anderson, Capital Radio DJ Jordan North, Bank of Dave founder Dave Fishwick, and Royal Dyche landlady Justine Lorriman, before concluding at Turf Moor.

The kit makes its competitive pitch debut when Burnley hosts Italian side Torino in a pre-season friendly at Turf Moor, giving fans their first live look at the ecru strip in action. As the Clarets prepare for an EFL Cup fixture on August 8 and the rigors of an EFL Championship promotion push kicking off on August 16, the garment serves as tangible proof that American investment in English football can occasionally honor local tradition with genuine care.
